When Direct-to-Garment Is the Right Choice
Direct-to-garment printing works like an inkjet printer for fabric: water-based ink is jetted straight into the fibers of the shirt. There is no setup, no screens, and no limit on colors, so DTG shines on photographic artwork, detailed illustrations, gradients, and one-off pieces where nothing else makes financial sense.
Because the ink soaks into the cotton rather than sitting on top of it, a DTG print feels essentially like the shirt itself. There is no plastic hand, no stiff patch, nothing to peel. That soft finish is why DTG is popular for retail-style tees, art prints, memorial shirts, and anything a customer will actually want to wear every week.
DTG does have a sweet spot. It performs best on 100% cotton or high-cotton blends in light and mid-tone colors; heavy polyester and very dark garments require a white underbase that changes the feel and cost. When your garment or quantity pushes past what DTG does well, we will point you to DTF or screen printing instead.
One shirt is a perfectly normal order here. We print single pieces for gifts, samples, and prototypes as routinely as we run bulk jobs, and our designers will prep your file at the right resolution before anything is printed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between DTG and screen printing?
DTG jets ink directly into the fabric with no setup, making it ideal for single pieces and full-color detail. Screen printing has a one-time screen setup but becomes far cheaper per shirt above roughly 24 pieces.
How does a DTG print hold up in the wash?
Well, when cared for. Wash inside out in cold water, tumble dry low, and avoid bleach. Expect slight softening after the first wash - that is the ink settling into the fibers.
What garments print best with DTG?
100% cotton or high-cotton blends in light to mid-tone colors give the sharpest, softest results. Dark and polyester-heavy garments need an underbase and may be better suited to DTF.
Can I order just one shirt?
Yes. There are no minimums, and single-piece DTG orders are a normal part of our week.

I was in a total crunch. I already had the shirt and design, but needed it printed last minute and these guys came through. They did such an incredible job and were able to complete my small order of 1 shirt the same day.
The Printing Needle is a great place for embroidery orders, and they will accept any order no matter how small. Efficient, friendly, and professional service. My order turned out great.
The business did an amazing job fixing the low-res images that I provided and designing the apparel according to my requests.
