DTF transfer printing at The Printing Needle

DTF (Direct to Film) transfers are changing the custom printing game. If you've heard the buzz but aren't sure what DTF is, how it works, or whether it's right for your project — this guide breaks it all down.

What Is DTF Printing?

DTF stands for Direct to Film. Instead of printing directly onto a garment, the design is printed onto a special PET film, coated with adhesive powder, cured, and then heat-pressed onto the fabric. The result? Vibrant, full-color prints on virtually any material.

How Does DTF Work? (Step by Step)

  1. Design is printed onto clear PET film using specialized DTF inks (CMYK + white)
  2. Adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink surface
  3. The film is cured in an oven to melt and bond the adhesive
  4. Heat press transfers the design from the film onto your garment (300-325°F, 15 seconds)
  5. Peel the film — your finished product is ready!

What Fabrics Work with DTF?

This is where DTF really shines. Unlike DTG (which works best on cotton) or screen printing (which needs specific ink formulations), DTF transfers work on:

  • Cotton and cotton blends
  • Polyester and poly blends
  • Nylon and nylon blends
  • Leather and faux leather
  • Canvas, denim, and more

If you can heat press it, you can DTF it.

DTF vs Screen Printing vs DTG

  • DTF vs Screen Printing: DTF has no color limits, no screens to make, and no minimums. Screen printing is more cost-effective for large runs (100+ pieces) with fewer colors.
  • DTF vs DTG: DTF works on any fabric (polyester, nylon, etc.), while DTG is limited to cotton. DTF transfers can also be stored and applied later.
  • DTF vs HTV (vinyl): DTF is faster to produce, handles complex multi-color designs, and feels softer than layered vinyl.
