Black hoodie fabric with raised puff ink and gold foil print on a teal background

Standard plastisol is flat, smooth and reliable. But sometimes a design needs to pop off the shirt, catch the light or glow in the dark. That is where specialty inks come in. They are fun, they get attention, and they are not right for every job. Here are five of the most popular specialty screen print effects, and an honest take on when each one is worth it.

1. Puff ink: the raised, 3D look

Puff ink contains an additive that expands when heated in the dryer, so the print rises off the fabric and feels soft and slightly squishy. It looks a lot like embroidery without the stitches. It works best on bold block letters, numbers and simple shapes. Fine lines and tiny text lose definition because the ink swells. Worth it when: you want a premium streetwear feel on a hoodie, tee or beanie-style design with chunky artwork.

2. Foil: a true metallic shine

Foil is applied over a printed adhesive layer, then pressed so a thin metallic film bonds to the design. The result is a mirror-like gold, silver, rose gold or holographic finish that regular ink cannot match. Worth it when: the design has a bold shape, like a crest, a script word or a border, and you want a statement piece for a brand drop, an anniversary or a premium event shirt. Skip it for very detailed artwork.

3. Metallic ink: shimmer without the foil

Metallic inks are loaded with fine metal-look particles. They give a softer shimmer than foil, and they print like regular ink, so they handle finer detail. Worth it when: you want a hint of sparkle on lettering or accents and do not need a full mirror finish.

4. Glow-in-the-dark ink

Glow ink charges under light and gives off a soft green-white glow in the dark. It looks pale in normal light, so it is often layered with other colors. Worth it when: the shirt is for Halloween, night runs, haunted attractions, kids' events or any crowd that will actually be in the dark. The glow fades over time, so treat it as a fun effect, not a safety feature.

5. High density ink: sharp, raised edges

High density ink builds up thick layers with clean, crisp edges. Unlike puff, it does not expand, so detail stays sharp. It gives a rubbery, dimensional look that stands out on logos and numbers. Worth it when: you want texture and precision together, such as team numbers or a hero logo on a jacket or hoodie.

Side by side

Effect Look and feel Best artwork Watch out for
Puff Raised, soft, 3D Bold shapes, big letters Fine detail blurs
Foil Mirror metallic Crests, script, borders Not for tiny detail
Metallic Soft shimmer Lettering, accents Less shine than foil
Glow Glows after light exposure Simple fun graphics Glow fades over time
High density Thick, crisp, rubbery Numbers, logos Stiffer feel on big areas

Do specialty inks affect price and timing?

Yes. They add extra steps, such as additional screens, curing or foil pressing, so they cost more than a standard one-color print and can add a little production time. How much depends on the effect, the number of colors and your quantity. The fastest way to know is to request a quote with your artwork. Specialty effects are done through screen printing, which is the best value at 24 or more pieces.

A simple way to decide

  • Use one specialty effect per design. Puff plus foil plus glow usually looks busy.
  • Simplify your art. Bold, clean shapes show off specialty inks best.
  • Pick the effect for the audience. Streetwear fans love puff, brands love foil, kids love glow.
  • Choose a garment that suits it. Dark, smooth fabrics make foil and glow stand out.

Planning a big order of simple shirts? A standard ink is often the smarter spend. Save specialty inks for the one piece you want people to talk about. If you also want custom hoodies, take a look at our bulk custom hoodies.
