Walk into any Orange County tasting room on a Saturday afternoon and you'll spot the staff before you spot the bar. Matching aprons, embroidered polos, maybe a rolled-sleeve flannel with the still logo stitched on the chest. That's not an accident. Distilleries, wineries, and craft tasting rooms live and die on brand feel, and the people pouring your flight are walking billboards for it.
We've built apparel for a handful of local distilleries and tasting rooms over the past year, and the same six questions come up almost every time. If you're opening a tasting room, expanding a wine club, or just tired of staff showing up in whatever shirt they grabbed that morning, here's what you need to know before you place an order.
1. Aprons take more abuse than any other piece you'll order
Wine drips, whiskey splashes, and citrus garnish juice all end up on the front of an apron by hour two of a busy tasting. A thin cotton apron with a printed logo will show cracking and fading within a few months of that kind of daily contact. We push tasting rooms toward heavier canvas or waxed-cotton aprons with an embroidered logo on the chest or bib pocket. Embroidery survives repeated washing and staining better than any print method, and it holds up under the friction of being tied, untied, and stuffed in a laundry bag every single shift.
2. Polos are for the tasting bar, tees are for events
Most of our distillery and winery clients run two tiers of apparel. Embroidered polos or button-downs for staff behind the bar during regular hours, and screen-printed or DTF tees for barrel releases, harvest parties, and festival pop-ups. The polos need to look sharp for months at a time; the event tees just need to look great in photos for one weekend and can be reordered cheaply every season with new artwork.
3. Your label art usually already has everything we need
One thing that surprises new clients: your bottle label artwork is almost always print-ready for apparel too. If your label was designed as vector art (AI, EPS, or a high-res PDF from your label printer), we can pull the logo mark straight off it for embroidery digitizing or screen printing without you commissioning anything new. Skip this step and you're paying twice for the same logo.
4. Color count matters more for wine and spirits branding than most industries
Craft beverage logos love gold foil, metallic copper, and deep burgundy tones that don't translate directly to standard screen printing ink or thread colors. Before you finalize an order, ask your print shop to match Pantone codes from your label or bottle, not just eyeball it from a photo on your phone. A logo that's slightly off-copper on a staff polo is a small thing, but it's the kind of small thing regular customers notice.
5. Retail merch is a different order than staff uniforms
If you're selling branded hats, tees, or koozies at the tasting room register, don't order them the same way you order staff apparel. Retail merch needs softer, more wearable blanks (ring-spun tees, structured trucker hats) because customers are judging fit and feel, not just durability. Staff apparel can prioritize toughness over softness since it's getting worn ten shifts a week.
6. Order ahead of harvest season and holiday tasting rushes
Fall harvest events, Thanksgiving weekend tastings, and holiday gift-shop traffic all hit at once for OC wineries and distilleries. Waiting until October to order new staff shirts or event merch means competing with every other seasonal apparel order in the region. We recommend locking in artwork and placing bulk staff apparel orders by late summer so embroidery digitizing and any custom color matching is done well before the rush.
Screen Printing vs. Embroidery for Tasting Room Apparel
| Factor | Screen Printing | Embroidery |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Event tees, seasonal releases, retail merch | Aprons, polos, staff uniforms worn daily |
| Stain & wear resistance | Good short-term, fades with heavy washing | Excellent, holds up to years of laundering |
| Metallic / gold tones | Possible with metallic ink, limited detail | True metallic thread available, more accurate |
| Cost for small runs | Lower per-piece cost on 12+ pieces | Slightly higher due to digitizing fee |
| Turnaround | Fast, ideal for pop-up events | A bit longer on first order, fast on reorders |
